  2. I ‘d like to propose a new idea.
You ‘ll find it at the above mentioned web site.
Up to now it is proven too difficult for most people to understand the whole concept due to it’s uttermost simplicity! I hope you and your site’s visitors will give it a good thought and may be take it into serious consideration the possibility and most of all the necessity of its implementations as it seems – to me at least – to be the only solution under today’s circumstances.

  3. I think at this crucial moment for the Greek State and the Greek Proud Nation, serious Initiatives such this should be supported, shared, promoted by the ”silent” healthy Greek majority. But I think this healthy Initiative should be larger and louder. Otherwise nobody and especially the decision makers will not listen. Unfortunately the political elit system in Greece never listened to the experts. Since the time is now running against us, its time for them to listen!

The economically orthodox path for Greece is definatelly to stay in EU and in the Eurozone. The Economic Growth that everybody talks about, will never come with theoretical general statements by politicians from whichever party they come from.
The Growth will come and the Greek Economy will be come gradually healthy if all following take place and will be implemented:

-Make clear to EU Partners that Greece really wants to stay in EU and in Eurozone (This open discussion does not help Greece)
-Healthy State Financials (lower debt, lower deficit, logical inflation)
-structural reforms in the public and private sector
    -proper absorption of EU funds
    -stable and healthy tax system
    -productive public administration
-NO to red tape and corrupution
Healthy economy, meaning healthy open economy with free competition in the public and private sector
-proper and functional financial and banking system
-private productive investments from the greek companies
-Foreign Direct Investments (But the foreign Investors will come only when the trust is back!)
-Largescale Strategic Foreign Investments which can be the success story and attract more smaller foreign investments
    -Be a Business Friendly Economy
-Support of Export oriented Greek companies
-Urgent support of main pillars of the Greek economy such as tourism, shipping, energy, tranport, IT etc
-Urgent support of Greek SMEs companies!
-Invest in Innovation, and High Qualified Greek Human Capital
-And of course many other actions that there is not time to write! etc etc

The Time for political, theoretical approaches is over. Its time for serious action and implemention for the decision makers. Its time to listen and then implement!

  4. Keating Willcox says:

Here is a solution similar to my recent suggestion. Assuming that France and Germany want to end the Euro and create a new Northern Euro, with no southern countries, I would suggest a new financial group called the Southern European Financial Organization. Each of the PIIGS keeps its own currency, but subsidizes currency exchanges so that the transaction cost of moving from Drachmas to Lira is nearly zero. Each country makes its own currency strong by offering price controls in nearly all goods and services, using coupons for routine medical services, university education, medical tourism, and long term retirement care. Each country has a single tax free port, just like Hong Kong. Each country insists that all folks on unemployment or disability spend their day doing online homework, as job training and a disincentive to stay unemployed. All the benefits of the Euro, none of the costs, implement in one week, problem solved. All bank loans repaid in some of the coupons generated by the price supports, so all debt repaid…

I sent this to all members of the Greek parliament..

I wanted to express my extreme sadness about your economic situation. Our prayers are with you always.

I had some ideas about how your situation might become better. I hope these ideas are helpful.

    1. The Greek government can pay off every debt that Greece has to any international entity, immediately, in New Drachma. One New Drachma is equal to one Euro.
    2. The Greek government can provide price supports for most Greek commodities and services, in New Drachma. It can provide government price supports in agricultural commodities, mineral commodities, and service commodities such as coupons for hotel rooms, restaurant meals, taxi and bus transport, routine medical and dental services, legal and accounting services, long term medical care, retirement housing and care, university tuition, and other services that can be offered by coupon. The government can purchase these commodities according to fixed prices in New Drachmas. This makes the New Drachma a hard currency and gives Greece full employment. Greek pensions can be paid in New Drachmas, and exchanged for Greek goods and services in New Drachmas. The elderly and poor can purchase anything they need in New Drachmas.
    3. All government purchase transactions can be online, and all government payments in New Drachmas can be direct deposit. There never needs to be actual new Drachma paper bills. The actual system could be set up within a matter of days.
    4. The government can sell these commodities or service coupons as needed to generate income. The government can auction off commodities and coupons using existing online auction services. Eventually, the government can organize its own auction sites. International banks and businesses holding New Drachmas can redeem them for commodities, or coupons for services sold on these auction sites.
    5. In the beginning, the New Drachma will likely plummet to a lower price in Euros, and this permits tourists and customers to come to Greece and get great deals. Greek exporters can export products priced in New Drachmas and offer great prices. Manufacturers will rush to Greece to set up manufacturing plants for export goods. Over time, since the New Drachma is a hard currency, it can return to a higher value. By adjusting the level of price supports, the government can modify the purchasing power of the new Drachma quickly and easily.
    6. The government can move the economy away from cash, by paying only with direct deposit, and giving enormous incentives for retail business to accept payments by credit card or Paypal. This will allow an easier path to follow money and collect reasonable sales taxes.
    7. Pensioners under 65 who are not working, and unemployed folks under the age of 65, must work ten hours a day on academic homework, grammar, math, science, and business or they do not receive their full pension.
    8. One port in Greece is designated as a “Hong Kong” style tax-free port, where commerce and trade can be conducted tax free.
    9. Greece stays in the Eurozone. Euros remain the currency of business and wealth. No change is made to any bank accounts in Euros. No more austerity measures. No more riots. Everyone works. Tourism generates income so the cities can be beautiful. Other Eurozone governments send their long term medical and retirement patients to Greek facilities. Eurozone students come to Greece to study. Greek hospitals offer medical tourism.

  6. Widmer says:

Greece is in a desperate lose/lose situation. I sympathize with the Greek people which now has to go through this hardships and I can fully understand its indignation being, in addition, the prey of unfair criticism.

But why do the Greek not reflect a moment and say, hey, is it really true that we are such lazy lot of undisciplined crredit mongers? If they did, they or rather their econmists might find facts that point to the real makers of this crisis: “brilliant” brains who decided it would be possible to create a monetary union with economies with such contrasting performances, as achieve Germany and Greece.

But the Eurocrats wanted at all cost the Euro and a monetary union as large as possible. They saw in it a means to promote their idea of a united Europe with a strong leadership from Brussels.

In their enthusiasm, they grossly underestimated the difficulty to harmonize the econmic performance of the members of such a community. Ignoring bluntly difficulties to be expected from the fact that mediterranean people have a mentality of their own, they imagined it would be easy to endoctrinate the „southeners“ to become busy working bees like the prototype of the German worker. They imagined it would be sufficient to provide the „poor“ countries with a modern, high-tech infrastructure and to start in these countries regional development programmes where the per capita income was lower than the average..
This was an illusion from the start, but nobody of the Euro bosses wanted to listen to criticism from the early warners.

To ujderstand why this idea is due to fail in the long run, one has to reflect a moment what the term „infrastructure“ meant before the advent of industrialization/modern technology and computer assisted machines and administration and what it implies to-day. A few examples will immediately disclose the hidden difference!

The system of canals across France, built in the 17th century is a monument of infrastructure which is still wlrking. The importance of these small waterways has, of course, diminshed, but thanks to the fact that the thousands of locks are built for the eternity and easy to handle, the system still works.

The old-fashiuons trams our parents climbed on had little to no comfort, but they were relatively cheap and could be easily repaired which rresulted in a long service life. Nowadays,we have elegant trams with comfortable seats, facilities for passengers with handicaps etc etc. However, their service time is short and the costs for replacementis are extremely high.

You could find innumerable examples illustrating thjs difference between old and modern infrasstructe. The necesssity of frequent replacement is particularly striking in the fiield of computer systems. Another fact is that modern infrastructure relies on sophistiasted high tech producgs that can usually only be provied by specialized producers. A low indusrialized country, modernizing its infrastructure will therefore
have to rely heavily on foreign know-how and supplies. which are expensive.

And that is the key difference: modern infrastructe is both short-lived and expensive. It is fair to say that each country should create the infrastruute it can afford! Even rich countries like Germany have ofen difficulties to raise funds for the necessary expansion of their regional infrastructure .

But let’s return to the esperiment of the Euro-zone designers. It started with noble theories: a system of development projects should strengthen the economic development of countries like Greece. As a result, a huge beaurocratic machinerye was set up which had to define and realize developmnent projects that should harmonize the econmic competivity of all memers of the monetary union.

But the architects of the Euro-Zone wanted the rrecipients countries to add their share to this development effort from the Brussels. Accordidng to the type of the project, the country had to add its part by investing a certin percent of the projects cost. To do that the poor countries had obviously to borrow money from a European or US bank! Thus, it was Brussels own wish that their partners invest in development projects!

Now comes the crucial point of my investigation! Do all these EU projects really fulfil the strict conditions layed down by the designers of this development strategy?

I have my doubts! But only an objecive investigation of the main projects that have been realized durng, say the last ten years will give the answer. Among the criteria to be checked are:

Short descrition of the object of the project
    Investment by the EU
Local investment by the reciient coundtry
Estimated positive effect on the country’s cpmpetivity
Has the public sector to contribute to the cost of running the project?
and if so which are the estimated yearly subsidies ?
Is the pubiic sector obliged to invest money when major repairs or replacements are to be planned? If so, how much money would have to be set aside per yea to that effeect?
Finally, do the positive factors outweigh the costs this project etails fort the country’s budget

It must be clear that projects that may help people in difficult situations or projects that render life more confortable are often a waste of money when they do not produce a long-time effect. So many of the regional project aiming at harmonizing the per capita income of all regions failed to improve permanently the diversities within a coungtry.Only later, the planners at Brussels realized that it is quite normal that a countra has so-called clusters of industrialization and regions with slow development, but rich environmental qualities.

It is late, but not too late! Where are the Greek economists who undertake this Herculaneuk effort? It may entirely upset the present sight of some narrow-minded spirits in Geermany and elsewhere! The results of this investigation may lead to the conclusion I have come to already now: Even a gift may be a burden that some of us cannot afford!

    Τι μπορουμε άραγε να προβλέψουμε επ’ αυτού;

    • Γεώργιος Στάικος says:
